Describe the bug

When running the az devops service-endpoint azurerm create command. I see the following warning:

.azure\cliextensions\azure-devops\azext_devops\dev\__init__.py:5: UserWarning: pkg_resources is deprecated as an API. See https://setuptools.pypa.io/en/latest/pkg_resources.html. The pkg_resources package is slated for removal as early as 2025-11-30. Refrain from using this package or pin to Setuptools

I just installed the azdo extension.
az extension add --name azure-devops

Related command

az devops service-endpoint azurerm create --name --azure-rm-subscription-id --azure-rm-subscription-name --azure-rm-tenant-id --azure-rm-service-principal-id

Possible solution (Extracted from existing issue, might be incorrect; please verify carefully)

Solution 1:

A short term fix is if you revert to version 80.8.0 by adding pip install setuptools==80.8.0 before running the az commands, the warning should not be thrown.

Solution 2:

In our case pip install setuptools==80.8.0 did not help, but running the following command worked fine:

$pythonPath= (az --version | Select-String "Python location").Line -replace "Python location ", "" -replace "'", ""

& "$pythonPath" -m pip install setuptools==80.8.0 --force-reinstall 2>&1 | Out-Null

I run into this issue today with az storage account network-rule list.

$ az storage account network-rule list -g AAAAAAAAAAAAA -n xxxxxxxxxxxx

Runing latest version on Ubuntu 24.04.2

Worth mentioning I'm not using pip, so the above suggested solutions are not relevant in all cases.
