Arcanum upscaling with Magpie does not work

Reproduction steps 复现步骤

1. Run Magpie as administrator
2. Install the latest original Arcanum (from Steam)
3. Install unofficial patch to enable windowed mode (https://terra-arcanum.com/drog/uap.html)
4. Modify C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Arcanum\Arcanum\HighRes\config.ini by setting Windowed = 1
5. Run C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Arcanum\Arcanum\HighRes\_install.bat
6. Run Arcanum
7. Press Alt+Shift+A
8. Try different capture modes (Graphics Capture, GDI, DwmSharedSurface)

It either says that this Window is not supported, or goes into full screen and draws a white centred rectangle.

It did not properly work with Lossless Scaling app either, although with Lossless Scaling it managed to get first few frames in DXGI mode (when the character started moving I pressed the hotkey and I saw upscaled animation for a split second after which the image froze: no mouse movement, no nothing) and in WGC capture mode it had the same white rectangle in the middle of the screen. Also, FPS counter shows 0. Changing queue target to 0, 1 and 2 has no visual difference.

From the logs, this message appears because the game is in a “Not Responding” state. Some older games don’t respond to messages while loading, so you might want to try scaling at a different time.

draws a white centred rectangle

This comes down to two factors. First, the capture method you chose may only be able to grab a blank white frame, this can happen with GDI and DwmSharedSurface, which may fail to capture windows that use advanced rendering techniques. Second, the effect you’re using, CuNNy-4x12-NVL, only doubles the image rather than scaling it to fill the entire screen, which is why you’re seeing a centered rectangle.

As for Graphics Capture not working, it could be related to the patch you’re using, though I can’t say for sure. Have you tried Desktop Duplication?
