After looking at Problemtool's code, it seems that our existing renderer tex -> html already renders pdfs into a raster format. There's no reason we couldn't do the same for md -> html.
The original reason for me forbidding pdf for Markdown was because browsers' pdf viewers did not render them nicely. But this position seems to have simply been uneducated.
