hard freeze under wsl #43518

Description

I'm experiencing a hard freeze issue using opencode on windows 10 in wsl.

At first, I thought it was a thermal issue unrelated to opencode, but there is no indication of a thermal issue and the issue persists after setting CPUs to 90% in power management. There is also no indication of a resource limitation for memory or disk space.

The freeze is a hard freeze. Display is still active, but mouse doesn't move, caps lock doesn't toggle, no keyboard actions have any effect. A hard reboot is required. I'm not seeing anything useful in windows or wsl linux logs. I'll add some concrete details below.

I was able to accomplish a lot of work for about 3 days despite the occasional freeze, but the problem is getting worse for some reason. Now, opencode will lock my machine often enough that I can't actually accomplish any work.

Today it manifested slightly differently. Instead of a hard freeze, it was a hard stutter. It would behave like a hard freeze, then allow mouse activity for about a second and then freeze again for a few seconds. Ending the powershell terminal in which I was running opencode ended the stutter.

After doing this several times, my git branch became corrupted and I had to blow it away and start over.

At first I was using opencode on a repository in /mnt/c, but after the stutter, I tried changing that to a wsl only path. That seemed to make things a bit more responsive, but I am still experiencing the hard freeze. I have not experienced the stutter since working only from a ~/ path, but I don't know if that's because there was some cruft in the working directory that had an impact.

Now I'm only experiencing the hard freeze.

So, now opencode is useless, unless I can figure out a solution or workaround. Any ideas welcome.

Here are some more details that might be relevant:

WSL version: 2.7.11.0

Kernel version: 6.18.33.2-2

WSLg version: 1.0.73.2

MSRDC version: 1.2.7214

Direct3D version: 1.611.1-81528511

DXCore version: 10.0.26100.1-240331-1435.ge-release

Windows version: 10.0.19045.7663

Linux version: Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS

Opencode version: 1.18.18 (installed via curl)

No plugins.

Windows system event viewer does not have any relevant errors around the freeze time. Ubuntu's syslog doesn't have any relevant errors around the freeze time.

opencode logs have a lot of null characters at about the time of the freezes, but no other messages that might be helpful. Often these null blocks are preceded by message="exiting loop" but not always.
