Some devices ( like mine ) uses whatever brightness was set while device was awake when it's put on aod , however it should use auto bringness even when on aod mode
Proposed Solution
Keep ambient light sensor awake as long as screen is awake ( when device is ON or when on AOD ) only turn it off when screen is off ( when proximity sensor detects screen sis against something like device is put down screen first on table ensuring proximity and ambient light sensor works in shifts , if aod is turned off ( by scheduling through ROM or app ) shut ambient light sensor off too so that it's not over burdened
