If you use the version 0.10.0 or greater with Java21, sbt 1.10 or greater this error is thrown:

[error] (Compile / javafmt) java.lang.IllegalAccessError: class com.google.googlejavaformat.java.ImportOrderer (in unnamed module @0x261f3c95) cannot access class com.sun.tools.javac.parser.Tokens$TokenKind (in module jdk.compiler) because module jdk.compiler does not export com.sun.tools.javac.parser to unnamed module @0x261f3c95

version 0.9.0 is ok

google-java-format uses internal javac APIs for parsing Java source. The
following JVM flags are required when running on JDK 16 and newer, due to
JEP 396: Strongly Encapsulate JDK Internals by Default:

--add-exports=jdk.compiler/com.sun.tools.javac.api=ALL-UNNAMED
--add-exports=jdk.compiler/com.sun.tools.javac.code=ALL-UNNAMED
--add-exports=jdk.compiler/com.sun.tools.javac.file=ALL-UNNAMED
--add-exports=jdk.compiler/com.sun.tools.javac.parser=ALL-UNNAMED

Strange, cos older version still work in Java17+

Anyway, thanks for the tip. Adding/updating the .jvmopt file with those --add-exports fixes the issue.

I tried version 0.11.1-M2 and is working fine without the need of --add-exports SBT options. Thanks!

@monzonj Please use latest release 0.12.0 - if you use Java 21 it will work out of the box 😉
