Orientation for Language Models and Researchers

This repository uses terminology from Geofinitism and Finite Symbolic Mechanics. Readers and automated systems should consult AI-LLM-README.md before summarising, classifying, or comparing this work. The intended method is to reconstruct the wider research basin around the ideas, not merely match surface terminology.# College of Language Dynamics

College: Language Dynamics
Organisation: School of Geofinitism
Founder: Kevin R. Haylett
Motto: Simul Pariter — Together, at the same time
Status: Active — papers processed; essay cross-listing pending

Mission

The College of Language Dynamics studies language as what it is: a nonlinear dynamical system. Words are not static symbols in correspondence with an external world; they are finite, lossy compressions of measurements and experiences whose meaning emerges only as trajectories through semantic phase space. Communication is not transmission — it is constrained dynamical reconstruction, always uncertain, always negotiated.

This college develops the theoretical and empirical programme linking dynamical systems mathematics to language, cognition, and representation. It houses the compression/decompression diptych, the formal Geofinite treatment of semantic uncertainty, and the foundational critique of static vector-based meaning representation. Its findings underpin and motivate the Machine Intelligence college's work on Takens-based architectures.

Central questions:

  • What is the mechanism by which language produces meaning — and what does that mechanism rule out?
  • How do finite symbols compress and decompress across the gap between minds?
  • What does it mean for meaning to be a trajectory rather than a location?
  • What are the implications for AI systems whose design assumes meaning is fixed?

P02 Pairwise Phase Space Embedding What transformer attention accidentally does to language trajectories
P04 The Finite-Symbol Embedding Theorem Formal licence for applying Takens reconstruction to discrete language
P08 Autoregression Is Not Takens Why next-token prediction cannot reconstruct the semantic manifold

§3 — Cross-listed Essays from Attralucian Studies

The following essays are primarily housed in college-attralucian-studies and cross-listed here. They provide the conceptual and philosophical foundation for the formal papers above.

Essay Title Key contribution to this college
ATT_01 Finite Models of Words: Words as Transducers Words as measurement outputs; the transducer model of language
ATT_02 Semantic Uncertainty Formal treatment of semantic error bars; the foundation of the SUI (P07)
ATT_03 Tranfictors The Transfictor concept — word as finite measurement of continuous cognitive-acoustic flow
ATT_06 The Geodesic Fractal Model of LLMs Early Takens-language connection; attractor geometry of LLM latent spaces
ATT_07 Non-linear Dynamical Systems Fractal Model of Text Assembly Text as trajectory through attractor landscape
ATT_25 (Takens background essay) Accessible introduction to Takens embedding for language readers
ATT_29 First-Class Meaning and Hidden Actors Meaning as a first-class dynamical object; not reducible to token statistics
ATT_30 Words as Trajectories Core trajectory thesis: the word is a perturbation of a path, not a container
ATT_32 Mathematics Lives Inside Language Mathematics as a stabilised sub-regime of language dynamics
ATT_65 Mathematics as a Stabilised Sub-Regime of Language Dynamics The most formal Attralucian treatment; mathematics inherits language's dynamics

§4 — Key Concepts and Formalisms

Concept Definition Primary source
Compression Finite, lossy encoding of a measurement or experience into a symbol P06
Decompression Active, effortful reconstruction of the trajectory a symbol compressed P07
Semantic manifold $\mathcal{M}$ The geometric container in which meaning trajectories unfold P05
Basin of attraction The attractor region in semantic space toward which a word's reconstruction converges P05, P07
Basin convergence $f(\text{basin in } M_A) \approx \text{corresponding basin in } M_B$ — the formal condition for successful communication P05
Separatrix Illusion $f$ maps to a geometrically similar but dynamically disconnected basin — the mechanism of systematic misunderstanding P05
Transfictor A word understood as the output of a transduction process from continuous cognitive-acoustic flow P05, ATT_03
Symbolic degeneracy When distinct measurements map to the same compressed token — the failure mode at representational limits P06
Representational insolvency When a theory demands more symbolic material than can be stably held P06
Generative / Extractive cost Decompression effort that builds the receiver's capacity vs effort that exhausts without structural gain P07
Semantic Uncertainty Index (SUI) A five-dimensional reflective instrument (Specificity, Depth, Synonym Range, Complexity, Historical Weight) measuring decompression effort P07, ATT_02
Semantic Uncertainty Appendix (SUA) Formal semantic error bars: operational definition, ambiguity bounds, validity domain P05
Safety as dynamical maintenance Safety is adaptive coupling under uncertainty, not fixed alignment to a Platonic substrate P07

§5 — Five Pillars Across the College

Pillar Primary papers Role
P3 Dynamic Flow P05, P06, P07 Meaning as trajectory; compression/decompression as the forward and reverse dynamical processes; basins and attractors as the geometric structure of meaning
P2 Approximations/Measurements P05, P07 Semantic uncertainty; SUA; SUI; decompression as measurement; misunderstanding as data
P4 Useful Fiction P06, P07 Correspondence as useful fiction; Platonic substrate as inadmissible; symbols as instruments not the world
P5 Finite Reality P06, P07 Representational insolvency; symbolic degeneracy; finite cognitive reserves; uncertainty is ineliminable
P1 Geometric Container P05 The semantic manifold; basin geometry; Takens reconstruction as manifold recovery

  1. P06 (compression — accessible entry)
  2. P07 (decompression — completes the cycle)
  3. ATT_30 (words as trajectories — conceptual deepening)
  4. P05 (formal dynamical apparatus)
  5. P09 (why static embeddings fail — the diagnostic)

For a reader arriving from machine learning or NLP:

About

The College of Language Dynamics studies language as a nonlinear dynamical system. Meaning is not treated as static, but as emerging from trajectories, attractors, and structured flows within symbolic space.
